Rhinoplasty | nose reshaping

Nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty) is performed to improve the appearance of the nose and achieve better facial harmony.

It is important to discuss one’s expectation of the outcome with the surgeon who will then evaluate the structure of the nose and associated facial proportions. Then it is possible to discuss what can be achieved and what is most suitable in terms of facial appearance. It is important to have a realistic expectation.

An open rhinoplasty is a procedure involving the placement of a very small external incision in the columella of the nose (the area between the nostrils), in addition to the internal ones. This can allow better access to the cartilages of the nasal tip for reshaping or hte placements of cartilage grafts where necessary. Cartilage grafts may be taken from the nasal septum, the ear or the rib.

Rhinoplasty is a two to three hour procedure but in complex cases may take longer.

Recovery:

In the first two weeks after nose surgery, there may be nasal stuffiness. Also, the sense of smell may be diminished for a few days. There may be bruising around the eyes but this will usually settle within two weeks. A splint is worn over the nose and is removed at 7 days. There may be a temporary loss of sensation at the tip of the nose where the skin has been lifted. This settles over about eight weeks. The swelling of the nasal tissue can take up to six months to settle fully, and refining of the soft tissue of the tip can take more than twelve months.
